St David is the patron saint of Wales.
To mark St David’s Day, Welsh people around the world wear one or both of the national emblems of Wales – a daffodil and a leek.
In 2021, Covid restrictions mean that this year’s celebrations are online.
Usually, however, St David’s Day is celebrated with a national parade in the centre of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Many children wear traditional Welsh clothing and take part in dances.
Wales is one of the countries of the United Kingdom. There is also England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Lots of towns and villages across Wales organise their own parades and concerts, and many of the country’s castles and heritage sites let people visit them for free.
There is also a famous concert held on the day at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, where the BBC National Orchestraand Chorus of Wales perform traditional songs.
St David was born on the south-west coast of Wales, near to where the city of St Davids is today. The city has a population of about 2,000 people and is officially the smallest city in the United Kingdom.
We don’t know the exact year when St David was born, but it was probably between 462 and 515 AD.
The national emblems of Wales are the daffodil (el narciso) and the leek (el puerro).
People say that he lived for more than 100 years and died on Tuesday, 1 March 589.
There are many stories about miracles happening around St David. For example, it is said that he made the ground rise under him so that the crowd he was preaching to could hear him better, and that he restored the sight of another saint.
